Children’s Ministry

Central United Methodist Church is a family of faith that is passionate in its commitment to children and families.  We seek to walk with each person through all ages and stages of life, striving daily to love and live as Jesus did through thought, word, and deed.

At Central our goal is to provide Christ-centered, faith-filled experiences through Bible study, music, missions activities, and opportunities for fellowship.

There are so many ways for children and families to connect with others at Central Methodist.  On this page you will find some of them.

For more information, contact Ann Henderson Owens at (828) 253-3316, ext. 1308.

Youth Ministry

As we begin to look to the future of youth ministry at Central its important to remember, it takes a village, better yet, a congregation to instill the love of Christ into the lives of teenagers.

To learn more about Youth Ministry at Central UMC, please contact our Director of Youth Ministries, Andrew Mochrie at (828) 253-3316, ext. 1304.

Faith and the Arts

The Faith and the Arts Committee (formerly the Visual Arts Committee) of Central UMC believes that God calls us to express our love of him in every way possible.  We also believe that there are diverse ways of experiencing the Divine.  We see the visual arts as a medium which can motivate dialogue, encourage understanding, and provide comfort to creators and viewers of art, all of which may serve to stimulate and enhance spiritual growth.

We meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 3pm in the conference room of our church. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST TO JOIN US.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Hugh Meyer at popmeyer3@gmail.com.

United Women in Faith

UMW are a community of believers in God and disciples of Christ who are called to deepen their personal faith and to provide vital corporate ministries of worship, education, mission, fellowship, and evangelism in the church and the world.

All women are invited to join one of the 6 UMW circles at Central Church. Come join women just like you—women of all ages; single and married; working and retired; moms, grandmothers and even great grandmothers. We are women who love to travel, quilt, cook, garden, read, do crafts, enjoy music and the arts. We learn from each other and make life-long friends.

If you would like to get involved, please contact the church office at 828-253-3316.

Missions

As part of the community of the new covenant with Jesus Christ, we reach out with Christian love and compassion to meet human needs locally, nationally and globally. To learn how you can serve with Missions at Central UMC, please contact Elizabeth Devereaux.

Prison Ministry

“I was in prison and you visited me”. Matthew 25:43

There are children of God who live their lives off our beaten path – the homeless, for instance and those who are in prison. Christ calls his faithful to be the embodiment of the Holy Spirit in every crook and cranny of the world.

Central volunteers frequent five prison facilities in Western North Carolina and the local jail. The scriptures are taught, reading materials are distributed and Kairos weekend retreats (similar to The Walk to Emmaus) are conducted. Every week there are Central volunteers bringing the message of Christ to those in prison!

For more information on getting connected with Prison Ministry, please contact John Klees at (828) 667-0580.

Scouting

While various activities and youth groups teach basic skills and promote teamwork, Scouting goes beyond that and encourages youth to achieve a deeper appreciation for service to others in their community.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals. It is communicated to them that those in the Scouting family care about what happens to them, regardless of whether a game is won or lost.

If you would like more information on Scouting please contact Mack Salley (828) 258-2975.

Congregational Care Council

The Ministries of Congregational Care at Central UMC aim to nurture our members and others in need of care in our area. The precedent for care comes from Jesus who spent much of his ministry healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and turning the world upside down with the depths of God’s mercy. Jesus says “blessed are those who are merciful… blessed are those who mourn… blessed are those who are poor in spirit…”. These are the people who will receive mercy, be comforted, and who will receive the kingdom of God. We believe that by caring for others we encounter the living God in ways that reach far beyond our imagination or expectations. To care for the friend or stranger in our midst is to care for Jesus Christ himself. Our care for folks is universal and holistic.

For more information on getting connected with Congregational Care at Central UMC, please contact Lisa Rettew at (828) 253-3316 ext.1305.

Stephen Ministers are trained, lay caregivers who provide one-to-one Christian care to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated, and others facing a crisis or life challenge. Our Stephen Ministry team helps provide quality, caring ministry for those in need for as long as they need it.

Small Groups

Life happens all the time and sometimes we experience it through amazing joys along with really difficult days. At Central we believe that those times, the joyful times and the distressing times, should be lived in community.

Small groups at Central offer that opportunity. Whether it is though a Journey group, Sunday School Class or Theology Pub, there is a place for you at Central to find a group to walk through life with you.

There are many different options available to you at Central. Let us help you discern where you might find community. Feel free to contact our Minister of Connection & Discipleship, Patrick Neitzey, for more information.
