Lent 2024, Day 16

Give us this day our daily bread…

By: Mike Durr

This is the second sentence of The Lord’s Prayer. A few years ago I started thinking about our daily bread; not as bread for sustenance, but as Bread of Life. For me, the bread that Jesus talked about in John 6, and that we ask for in the Lord’s Prayer is this Bread of Life.

Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35

To contemplate this bread as a gift from God in the human person of Jesus, I must slow my pace through the Lord’s Prayer. Reflect on it. Then I relate this thought to the Lenten Season and where Jesus was headed as he said this to his disciples.

Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ (Luke 22:19)

This was the covenant Jesus was making for us through the Resurrection, being brought from death to unending life.

But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33)

For me, the daily bread is the Bread of Life!
