How Can You Take Local Action?

  1. Recycling bins in Asheville are single-stream, so just toss your recyclables into the bin without bagging them.  Plastic bags do NOT belong with recyclables!
  2. Plastic grocery bags and other "plastic films" can be recycled at several local big box stores.
  3. Asheville's Food Waste Reduction Initiative has 8 locations where you can drop off your food waste for composting.  Sign up at www.ashevillenc.gov.
  4. During Lent, try to adopt one additional habit that will benefit God's creation: e.g. use silicone utensils in cooking, use a bamboo cutting board instead of plastic, wash and reuse small bags, start composting.
  5. Plan some meatless meals.  Plant-based meals are kinder to our shared environment.
  6. As spring approaches, look for early blooming wildflowers in your neighborhood.  They are often tiny and bountiful.
  7. Express your gratitude to God for creating our beautiful Earth.  Be especially mindful of beauty in your part of the world.

Climate Justice & Faith

As United Methodists, we heed the call to do all in our power to care for planet Earth. In the Genesis 1 Creation narrative, God instructs human beings to care for the earth and all God created to dwell there.

“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants too.” – Psalm 24:1

What you can do to make a difference...

Lower Your Impact

“God is calling each of us to respond…and as a denomination we cannot hope to transform the world until we change our way of being in it” -2016 Book of Resolutions

Raise Your Voice

In Genesis 1, God entrusts the earth to the care of human beings—you and me. As followers of Jesus Christ, we have a responsibility to preserve, protect, and care for what God has created.
